Group Buy: EVOLVE Intake Pipe (T5 Only)

Postby euro3b on Mon Feb 09, 2009 9:57 am

Here is EVOLVES NEW product for the T5 engines... It is a larger intake pipe that feeds the engine. This pipe will work great with custom intakes or stock airboxes.

EVOLVE wrote:EVOLVE Turbo Intake Pipe

• Optimal design and construction for maximum power gains
• Precision formed 3” (76mm) aluminum tubing
• Thermal coating helps block and reflect heat
• Easy installation-direct replacement for factory pipe

The EVOLVE Turbo Intake Pipe is engineered to provide maximum power and torque for the T5 engine. This is achieved by increasing both flow and capacity of the pipe between the MAF sensor and the turbocharger. The factory plastic intake pipe necks down to just 2.16” (55mm) and integrates a resonator section that creates turbulence and restricts flow. Using mandrel bent, 3” (76mm) aluminum construction, our design allows greater and unrestricted air flow into the turbo, yielding more power and quicker turbo response. Our pipe has an increased internal volume of 41% over the factory pipe. A bright silver thermal coating reflects heat and helps keep the intake charge as cool as possible. The black plastic factory pipe absorbs under hood heat, creating a loss in power. All factory vacuum lines are maintained and are fastened to the Turbo Intake Pipe using the factory quick-connect fittings. High quality 4-ply silicone hoses (choice of Black, Blue or Red) and clamp are included to complete the installation. The Turbo Intake Pipe installs in about 30 minutes and includes easy to follow instructions.

Why not offer a complete “air intake system”?
We have evaluated all current “air intake” systems for the Volvo T5 and find several faults in design, function, and claims.

ECM Cooling. The ECM (Electronic Control Module) is the computer that controls all engine management functions. In stock trim, the ECM is mounted to the factory air box. The back side of the ECM is finned for cooling, and these fins protrude through a window in the air box to expose it to filtered air being drawn into the engine. A simple, effective, ingenious design by the factory to cool the ECM. Any aftermarket “system” that deletes the factory air box will jeopardize the life of the ECM due to improper cooling. The ECM gets beyond hot to the touch when operating, and we are aware of several ECM’s that have failed due to insufficient cooling as a result of being relocated from the factory air box. A heat damaged ECM requires replacement and reprogramming by a dealership—a $1,700.00+ cost.

MAF Sensor Contamination. The MAF Sensor (Mass Air Flow) is the component which reads how much air is being drawn into the engine, and then relays that information to the ECM to match the proper amount of fuel to match the air volume. The MAF Sensor is a very sensitive and precise sensor. When an oiled-type aftermarket air filter is used, oil is drawn through the filter and into the intake system. This oil collects on the MAF Sensor, which will start to give an inaccurate reading, causing poor performance and reduced mileage. Eventually, the MAF Sensor will fail, causing a check engine light and required replacement of the MAF Sensor.

Dishonest power gains. Our research has found the factory air intake box to not be a point of significant restriction. Some companies simply make products for the sake of having something to sell to make more money. We have evaluated the increased power claims of some of the systems on the market and find them to be less than honest.

Choice of colors: Black, Blue or Red Hoses (black is pictured)
Retail price: $159.00
First ten S40 Forum people: $115.00

When placing your order put "S40Forums" in the "Order Notes". It will still show $159.00 as they check out. Don will review all orders before they are processed, and will know based on that note to adjust the price to $115.00 plus shipping.

Thanks

Rich :)

PS Now you know why I said, its going to suck for those who have the K&N intake...

doesn't really suck for anyone with K&N?

K&N comes with an intake pipe just like this one + removal of stock air box for less restriction (this has been debated so differs based on one's opinion of physics.), however I'd be really interested to hear about these claims of destroyed ECMs from being repositioned as I've heard of no one ever having that problem..

Pretty sweet part. I dont expect to see anybody gain 20hp with this, but getting rid of the stock plastic pipe (especially if there really is a resonator in there!) will make you spool a lot quicker & will probly sound killer. The stock piping of the turbo system is a big point of restriction, and I saw results when I changed just the UPP in the SRT4. Besides, it's cheap, even at $159! The Samco kit would go great with this! I think I'm still gonna hack the factory box after I put this on.

Can anyone answer the following questions?

1. Any chance a wider diameter intake pipe like this could mess with the OEM computer regarding intake air flow?

Edit: Nevermind Don at Evolve just answered this question for me and as I suspected nope won't cause a problem.

2. Any chance a wider diameter intake pipe like this could void the manufacturer's warranty?

Edit: Nevermind Don at Evolve just answered this question for me and as I suspected nope won't cause a problem.

3. How difficult of an install would this be on the T5? Something definitely a Do-It-Yourselfer can do? Doesn't require any unique tools or anything? It looks like the connecting far end to the intake manifold (or does it connect to the turbo?) is a pretty tight squeeze! Do you need to install that end from under the car or can it be done from the top?

Edit: Don at Evolve said it's about a 30 minute install job, but didn't answer whether it has to be done from the bottom (could be a PITA if so with that big plastic cover under the car is all I'm thinking...) I'll look in the engine bay when I get home from work tonight to see if there's enough space down there to squeeze my fingers in, but in the meantime if anybody has installed a Typhoon and can answer I'd appreciate it.

Thanks in advance!

I think I answered my last remaining question. After popping the hood and taking a closer look tonight after work it appears the install may be able to be done from the top - will definitely be a tight squeeze to undue that bottom ring bracket, but then again it may end up having to be accessed from underneath going up through near the transaxle.

Are we needing to contact Don directly for this then? The way Rich phrased it made it sound like we could order it through their online store. Hence the confusion.

Hopefully I'm not letting a major cat out of the bag or something, but Don told me earlier today it should be posted to the website tomorrow, so I guess we'll just all have to keep our eye out for it...

To install this pipe would take no more than 20 minutes and accessing it from the top... how would you access this pipe from the bottom of the car? :?:

BTW guys, I forgot to mention that ordering this will take place on EVOLVE's site when they add this product on their site, it should be on early this week...

I just searched for the item on Evolve's store website and didn't see anything under S40, but I found it listed under the C30 so I just purchased one - hopefully the S40Forums Group Buy special will apply to ones purchased under the C30? :?: I left a note for Don when I purchased stating I'm from S40Forums so hopefully that'll do the trick to get the discount.

I'm just saying taking a look at where the bottom ring bracket is down by the turbo it may not be possible to even get a screwdriver down there from the top to loosen it, so that bracket may have to be accessed from underneath going up by the opening near the transaxel - obviously the pipe can't go in from the bottom - just loosening and tightening that bottom bracket.

Hey thanks for the link that is helpful. But if you can see, for that spark plug job the OEM intake pipe was just removed to the upper rear bracket, but if you look at the Evolve pipe - it's gonna have to be install all the way behind the engine at the lower bracket near the turbo - that's why I'm saying it's a bit more involved - not impossible of course mind you, but may require accessing that lower bracket near the turbo from under the car - that's all I'm saying. Yeah - it would be a breeze to install if the Evolve pipe connected to that upper bracket, but then again it wouldn't provide the extra diameter if it did...

It's probably easier to get to the turbo inlet from the bottom, depending on the covers you're talking about. The S40 snail sits down there pretty low. I would take the time anyway, just to make sure she's all sealed up tight. On the SRT hose kits I helped install, it was easier to assemble all of the pipes/elbows/T-clamps outside the car before installation. Leave the two end clamps on the hoses, but loose, slide the assembly in place, then jack up the passenger side wheel & tighten the clamp at the turbo inlet. Drop the car back to the ground & check the fit, then tighten the clamp at the filter/airbox. Again, CHECK YOUR COMPRESSOR BLADES WHILE YOU HAVE THIS TUBE OFF. You may need a dentist's mirror, but it will be worth the time so you dont spit your unbalanced, 90k RPM impeller out the exhaust pipe!

Thanks for the info Jake - very helpful as this will be the first time I'll be installing something like this. But can you please elaborate on your statement above? How would we "spit your unbalanced, 90k RPM impeller" just by installing this if we're careful with the install? TIA.
